As with most Japanese Acers its foliage turns fiery shades of orange and red in autumn. The new foliage of this striking Japanese maple emerges in spring a vibrant red, and as it ages it deepens in colour, turning rich claret until the autumn when it becomes a brighter shade once again before it falls. In shadier conditions, where the foliage is shaded by the outermost leaves, it may turn greenish, but it will usually retain a mahogany blush.
