The lobed grey-green leaves, each of which has a slender white and shrimp-pink margin, are the main reason that this upright Japanese maple is so highly prized. As with most Japanese Acers its foliage turns fiery shades of orange and red in autumn. The new foliage of this striking Japanese maple emerges in spring a vibrant red, and as it ages it deepens in colour, turning rich claret until the autumn when it becomes a brighter shade once again before it falls. In shadier conditions, where the foliage is shaded by the outermost leaves, it may turn greenish, but it will usually retain a mahogany blush. Aucuba japonica ‘Crotonifolia’ is a versatile evergreen shrub suitable for almost anywhere in the garden. Slow-growing, it will only reach 1.8m after 10 years if left unpruned.Like all aucuba varieties, ‘Crotonifolia’ will grow in shade, although its gold-blotched and finely-speckled leaves colour best in full sun.
