Cephalotaxus Harringtonia Fastigiata, also known as the Japanese Plum Yew, is an excellent landscaping specimen. Its columnar habit and attractive evergreen foliage make it particularly versatile in a variety of garden situations.The genus Cephalotaxus includes evergreen, coniferous shrubs and small trees grown for foliage that resembles yews. Female plants also have small, plum-like fruit when planted near a male pollinator. Plum yews are especially useful because they grow in shade. Plant as hedging, in foundation plantings, or as specimens. Choose a sheltered site with fertile, moist but well-drained soil in partial shade. This Sawara Cypress makes a compact slow growing specimen. Chamaecyparis pisifera 'Baby Blue' forms a dense cone shaped conifer with handsome silver-blue foliage. During particularly cold periods it may take on attractive purple tones that add to its appeal. This is a handsome, slim conifer that is deservedly popular. Foliage is grey-green taking on distinctly stronger bluer tints in the winter months. Correctly sited it is useful with its tightly packed uniform foliage giving strong vertical but contained lines and it shouldn't reach more than 3m. Excellent for background planting, especially in the smaller garden where it can protect smaller shrubs from the worst of the weather.Adaptable to almost all soil types, but prefers humus-rich, slightly acidic, loamy or sandy, moist, well-drained soils.
