CLIMBING PLANTS

  • Hedera has many uses all round the garden. It can be used to cover shady walls and trained to climb up or spread out along a low wall. Being evergreen, ivy is perfect for covering pergola poles, hanging baskets & tubs or creating a leafy backdrop beneath clematis and climbing roses. It’s a valuable wildlife plant, providing a late source of nectar and pollen for insects, and berries for birds in winter.Sold in a 11cm pot.
  • Trailing stems of handsome, hand-like green foliage that look superb all year round in any container. Hardy and perennial.Height and Spread: Trails to 30cm (12") in one season.Sun or part shade in fertile, moist but well-drained soil or potting compost. Plant at same depth as pot and gently firm and surrounding soil. Tubs plants will need watering regularly, especially if dry and windy. Border plants need regular watering until established. Feeding is only necessary in spring and summer.Sold in a 11cm pot.
  • This is an incredibly versatile plant. While young, it can be used as evergreen infill, and to hang over the edges of hanging baskets, windowboxes and patio pots. When it gets a little bigger, it is ideal for smothering a north-facing wall or fence, while if there is nothing for it to clamber onto, it will make decorative (and weed suppressing) groundcover. The variegation on the leaves can be variable, ranging from shades of rich green to near-white, and once it's established, it's a doddle to grow.   • This climbing Hydrangea shrub thrives in some shady and inhospitable areas of the garden. Slow to establish, it will eventually romp along a wall or fence, clinging by aerial roots.   • Pandorea jasminoides (bower plant) is a twining evergreen climbing plant with compound leaves of five to nine ovate, shiny leaflets. The fragrant flowers, borne in small clusters in spring and summer, are tubular with spreading lobes 4-5 cm in diameter.It can grow up to 500cm/5m in length. Likes most soils that are moist and well-drained (acidic soils are also suitable).Prefers full sun or part-shade.   • Beautiful evergreen self twining evergreen climbing plant.Has green leaves and fragrant white flowers which appear in Spring. Likes free-draining fertile or moderately fertile soil. It prefers neutral to alkaline soil conditions, but will grow in slightly acid soils too. Ideal place to plant is where you can enjoy its richly fragrant flowers, eg. beside a doorway or seating area. Sun or light shade is best, with shelter from cold, drying winds.
