Calluna Disco also known as Calluna Vulgaris.Another type of Heather.Low growing, hardy evergreen perennial shrub which thrive in acidic soils in open sunny locations or partial shade. They are the dominant plants in most heathlands and moorlands in Europe with different varieties having flower colours ranging from white, through to pink, a wide range of purples and reds. There are two varieties - Calluna and Erica. Calluna has small scale-like leaves carried in opposite pairs, whereas Erica's foliage is more needle-like and borne in whorls. This is a handsome, slim conifer that is deservedly popular. Foliage is grey-green taking on distinctly stronger bluer tints in the winter months. Correctly sited it is useful with its tightly packed uniform foliage giving strong vertical but contained lines and it shouldn't reach more than 3m. This lovely hart's tongue fern is both eyecatching and versatile. Known as the Tatting Fern because the frond pattern resembles lace tatting. Essentially the small pinnae are bead-like, and edge the fronds like a parade of half-moon shaped greenery. This deciduous cultivar is essentially a low grower to 1 foot or occasionally higher. But at whatever height, this fern is always a conversation piece. You may ask what's the difference between ornamental kale and regular kale?Apart from their looks, a key difference between this and the leafy greens you buy at the grocery store is that this variety isn't grown for flavour and as a result, the ornamental stuff is much less flavourful than the (edible) culinary leafy greens.
