Hosta Wide Brim, commonly known as Plantain lily is a clump forming, herbaceous perennial with large heart shaped dark green leaves with broad margins of a creamy yellow colour. The foliage of this Hebe is the main attraction to gardeners and the flowers these produce are just an extra benefit of growing this perennial. In July the Hosta Wide Brim bears tall, erect stems above the foliage with funnel shaped lavender coloured flowers which contrast well with the foliage.Planted in many locations, including flower beds and borders, used as ground cover or underplanting roses and trees. Flowers can be used as cut flowers. Commonly planted in containers also which allow for stunning patio displays or balcony planting for interest.Position: full sun, partial shadeSoil: moist, well-drainedSold in a 2 litre pot. -

RHS award of Garden Merit Hosta Sum & Substance is a clump-forming eye-catching plant with massive mid-green leaves up to 60cm (24") across topped with slightly scented pale lavender flowers in summer.Re-grows from ground level every year.Height: 1.2m (4ft) x Spread: 1.2m (4ft)Position: Well-drained, moist soil in some shade.Planting Guide: 1. Water pot well and leave to drain, 2. Dig a hole twice the size of the plant pot., 3. Mix some compost and general fertiliser into the soil., 4. Remove pot and place rootball level with soil., 5. Fill gap with soil/comost/fertiliser mixture., 6. Finally firm in well with heel and water well.Aftercare: In early winter remove all the foliage. In spring, take meaures to protect the plant against slugs and snalils. If the plant becomes too large or congested then lift, divide and plant in the autumn or spring.Tip, surround the area from the plant base outward to a fair bit with horitcultural grit, maybe place some large decorative stones to prevent the grit from escaping into the surrounding soil. Not only does this make the area look attractive but it acts as a deterrant to snails and slugs .Sold in a 3 litre pot. -
In the warmer months this tough hosta has huge, corrugated yellow-green leaves, and in July spikes of pale lilac flowers that appear. This plaintain lily makes a bold statement in a large container in a shady courtyard. In a border, it looks stunning close to an entrance or path, or among other plants with distinctive foliage, such as ferns. Although it will cope with some sun, the soil must be kept moist. The leaves are best shaded from the midday sun and sheltered from cold, drying winds. 'Great Expectations' is a hosta cultivar that features a 22-24 tall mound of large, variegated, oval, puckered, basal leaves with creamy white centers and wide, irregular, blue-green margins. Leaf centers emerge gold in spring before aging to creamy white. Foliage mound will typically spread to 30-33 wide.Hostas grow best in moist, well-drained, highly organic soils with a pH between 5.5 and 7.5. Sandy loam is better than clay because it provides more aeration for the roots. High-filtered or dappled sunlight is necessary for clean, healthy growth.Cut back to ground level and these will return year after year.Sold in a 2 litre pot. -
