Hebe are evergreen shrubs or small trees, with paired, simple leaves and racemes or spikes of small, 4-lobed, tubular to salver-shaped flowers in summer and autumn. 'Baby Marie' is a compact variety with small leaves and short racemes of pale lilac flowers in early summer.Position: full sun, partial shadeSoil: sand, clay, chalk, loam. Although the shrub doesn't need much in the way of fertilizer, you can apply some once a year in late winter or early spring prior to new growth. Growing a hebe plant is very easy. The versatility of these shrubs allows you to grow them in different ways. Use them for edging, plant them in borders, grow them in rock gardens or even in containers. To help keep your Hebe flowering well, remove the dead heads from the plant when they start to shrivel up. You could give your Hebe a trim all over in the early winter. Lilac-blue summer flowers appear on short spikes, fading to white, among grey-green leaves with narrow red margins and veining when young. This small, spreading, evergreen shrub makes an attractive low, informal hedge or edging plant for a mixed border. This vigorous evergreen climber can be variable, with veined or plain big glossy ovate or triangular leaves which are excellent for covering large walls and fences - or hiding eyesores. Its aerial roots, that form along the stems, enable it to cling to support, so no trellis or wires are needed, but it is also often planted on slopes to stabilise soil and provide year-round groundcover. It can have small insignificant greenish flowers that won't look much to us humans, but these are loved by pollinating insects. Then it can go on to produce black berries, which the birds and wildlife will devour. This variegated Persian ivy has large, heart-shaped, mottled-grey-green leaves, edged with cream. It is a beautiful, self-clinging, evergreen climber suitable for brightening a partly shady wall or for use as fast-growing groundcover. Mature plants bear large, spherical green flowers in autumn. This climber thrives in alkaline soil.Sold in a 3 litre pot. -
Hedera has many uses all round the garden. It can be used to cover shady walls and trained to climb up or spread out along a low wall. Being evergreen, ivy is perfect for covering pergola poles, hanging baskets & tubs or creating a leafy backdrop beneath clematis and climbing roses. It’s a valuable wildlife plant, providing a late source of nectar and pollen for insects, and berries for birds in winter.Sold in a 11cm pot. -
Trailing stems of handsome, hand-like green foliage that look superb all year round in any container. Hardy and perennial.Height and Spread: Trails to 30cm (12") in one season.Sun or part shade in fertile, moist but well-drained soil or potting compost. Plant at same depth as pot and gently firm and surrounding soil. Tubs plants will need watering regularly, especially if dry and windy. Border plants need regular watering until established. This is an incredibly versatile plant. While young, it can be used as evergreen infill, and to hang over the edges of hanging baskets, windowboxes and patio pots. When it gets a little bigger, it is ideal for smothering a north-facing wall or fence, while if there is nothing for it to clamber onto, it will make decorative (and weed suppressing) groundcover. The variegation on the leaves can be variable, ranging from shades of rich green to near-white, and once it's established, it's a doddle to grow.
