The Prunus ‘Starlight’® has been awarded the highly coveted title of RHS Plant of the Year 2024. This esteemed accolade recognises the outstanding qualities and unique characteristics of this exceptional new variety.Prunus ‘Starlight’® displays exceptionally attractive and unusual, pure white, star shaped flowers (similar in style to Magnolia stellata), with a profuse flowering habit in mid to late March, often extending into April. The flower type is unusual and a great innovation in plant breeding, created in 2006 from a cross between a sweet eating cherry and Prunus x subhirtella ‘Autumnalis Rosea’. Due to its parentage involving P. x subhirtella ‘Autumnalis Rosea’ there is occasionally some earlier winter flowering following periods of mild weather with good resistance to frost damage. ‘Starlight’ is a robust tree with graceful habit, performing well on all soil types and regions of the UK. There are no known issues with pests and in particular observations show no susceptibility to black fly aphid.Growing Tips:Best grown in well-drained soil, in full sun to achieve the best flower display and autumn colour. Will tolerate most soil types including chalk and clay.Height and Spread (after 10 years): 4m x 3mSold in a 12 litre pot.Picture image courtesy of Frank P Matthews
